The users are part of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) which aims to ban nuclear explosions worldwide. The treaty curbs the development of new nuclear weapons and helps prevent human/animal suffering and environmental damage that are caused by nuclear testing. Based in Vienna, Austria, the CTBTO was founded in 1996 and has over 260 monitoring facilities across more than 70 countries.

The Treaty has a unique and comprehensive verification regime to ensure that no nuclear explosion goes undetected. One of the pillars of this regime is the International Monitoring System (IMS).

The IMS consists of 337 facilities worldwide that monitor the planet for signs of nuclear explosions, including seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasound, and radionuclide stations.

The Cinderella G2 is an automated robotic system that transfers the sample through different stages without human intervention on a continuous 24-hour cycle. It runs on dedicated operating software and streams a data output via Ethernet. The data stream contains all relevant system information, including ancillary data such as meteorological readings, system health status, and process step status.

Five Cinderella systems deployed within the IMS radionuclide stations faced obsolescence challenges:
-1-
Extensive and highly complex documentation was required for the industrial robotic systems.
-2-
Strict limitations were imposed on the volume of data transmitted between the robot and the central data collection center via satellite.
-3-
Remote locations often did not have internet access, so software installation needed to be seamless and easy to use for unskilled operators.
-4-
ITU had to win a competitive tender to participate in the project as the customer gave a preference to teams with expertise in radiochemistry.

The Solutions
We developed a sample handling operator software that enables automated data collection from the equipment and secure transmission to CTBTO headquarters in Vienna.

To achieve the goals of this project, our team completed the following tasks:
  • Developed a software data emulator of the Cinderella G2 system
  • Adapted the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) software from manual stations for use with the Cinderella G2 system
  • Provided a user-friendly interface
  • Built and maintained the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network to ensure reliability and alignment with the latest technological and scientific standards

"The task was challenging. The equipment for testing was available at a limited scale and only via remote access; the technical documentation was partially incomplete. ITUniversum addressed all the challenges in a very organized and consistent way: collecting user requirements, writing use cases, testing each feature, and verifying the compliance of the technical instructions with the real hardware. The agile approach was very efficient and allowed first versions of the software to be delivered within a couple of months."
